The Times: Packaging Innovations supplement
Unless you’re in the packaging industry, Burgopak is not a name you will be familiar with. But the average consumer will be familiar with its patented product - when you consider the London firm has produced more than 53 million packages in 30 countries for products including mobile phones, CDs, DVDs, SIM cards, pills and promotional items, writes Will Rankin.
The Burgopak system can be applied to a virtually unlimited range of designs and product applications for both the high-end luxury packaging sector and the low cost / high volume packaging and promotional sector. To date, Burgopak packaging has been hand assembled. And it’s no suprise the man behind the innovative design took inspiration from origami and pop-up books. But now, for the pharmaceutical sector, the company is taking a new approach.
Burgopaks offer particular advantages for pills and capsules in blister packs. Its pharmaceutical solution is portable and easier to access than conventional packaging. It’s also safer because the leaflet is packaged with the pills and so can’t be separated from them. The package reinforces the producer’s brand since the packaging is kept with the pill blister, and with a plethora of global patents, they are difficult to counterfeit.
Burgopak’s unmistakable style has set Bayer’s new Rennie ICE product from the rest. It provides a highly portable product for consumers, while the sleek packaging also provides the patient information booklet, the two blisters and the branded outer carton, all in one convenient package.
And the new indigestion tablet packs have been manufactured using Burgopak’s automated packaging machine, which was recently unveiled at Brecon Pharmaceuticals in Wales, and is capable of producing 20 million packs a year. Burgopak has also joined forces with leading US contract packer, McKesson’s RxPak, in a deal that will bring the revolutionary new compliance package to the US pharmaceutical market.
